Taz, Coby, and sneaky dealings
He and my son have been keeping me in stitches. They play hide and seek where Coby gets covered in a sheet, then my son asks me where Coby is, then I say I don’t know, then Coby jumps from under the sheet. Coby also plays find Mommy pretty well. I am going to teach him to find Taz next. Fetching and returning skills are getting better, too. He is learning to play nicely and respectfully.
I have to admit that Coby has growled a few times more, but he always cuts it short because he knows he is in trouble. He tries, really and it doesn’t help that my son is trying to choke him half to death with the chain sometimes. They are both pretty rough boys. Always watching… always *sigh*
still barking…

Thanks, Mom!
I bought him 2 new toys since he ripped his octopus toy that he had since he came home with us. He has this fixation on ripping things to pieces as soon as he finds a weakness… like a tear. He started rooting for the center like a crazy dog. I am teaching him to be more gentle than that with his toys. I got him a hamburger squeaky which rolls like a ball and an owl squeaky. He ripped the hamburger the first day and I sewed it back up. I have to keep watch to make sure he doesn’t destroy these.

Furry Friday: In your face!

He did well alone…
Last night he was alone for about 5 hours. I did give him 1/2 a melatonin pill this time because I didn’t want him to go ballistic. I found out that my reservations about giving him the pill were unfounded as it is an herbal/natural medicine that will not harm him. Being as we are a mostly drug-free family *exception for hubby with blood pressure issues right now*, I didn’t want to put the dog on drugs! He tore up his mattress, peed in the crate *probably right before we got here at 10:20pm since he is used to going out at 10*, and somehow moved the crate from one side of the room to the other. He didn’t get out, and he only tried once it looked like. The bars were only bent a little, although he hurt his gums a bit this time. They were bleeding slightly. He didn’t break his teeth, only removed a little enamel on one. This is the best response to us being gone yet…especially since he didn’t get out.

EW GROSS!
He ate his own refuse today. I know why, though. He hadn’t done his #2 business on our half hour walk this morning *like he usually does about every other day*. This is supposed to be his off day, but apparently he couldn’t wait and he didn’t tell me. I was in the bathroom, so he took his liberty. When I came out, he was looking at me with his head down…all sheepish like he did something wrong and he knew I was going to find out.
Low and behold I keep smelling something and I know it’s his poop. I also know I can’t find it, even though the scent is really strong in this one spot. Well, he ate it leaving only a small spot and the smell of it in the house. I guess he was scared to get into trouble again, as last time he did it my husband was home and took his turn disciplining Coby.
He didn’t want to be near me for most of the day. I guess he was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I didn’t say anything to him about it. I just neutralized the smell, disinfected it, and that was that.

Inside dog? Really?
I still can’t believe he is meant to be inside. He LOVES being outside, especially in the cold. It reminds me of my former pet Wolfie. He would lay outside his house while it snowed and let the snow cover him from head to toe, then he would get up, shake it off, and do it all over again. Coby romps in the snow and ice like he was born for it. He whines to stay outside to play. I don’t think he was meant to be inside for any length of time except maybe at night for when he gets lonely.
We were running around like crazies this afternoon in the snow. He had a ball. He wants to do it again, but everything is completely iced over now and too dangerous. He already went for his last bathroom break and is settling in for the night.
He is also a rather hungry rascal. Two meals a day isn’t cutting it, but I give him a snack later in the day to try and appease his appetite instead of giving him a full meal. I don’t want him to get all fat and lazy on me.

Coby’s schedule
I have changed his schedule to fit our life as it stands. At first he was going outside about 5 times a day, till he got used to our area and the way we do things. Now he is down to 3 times a day unless he REALLY needs it or I have to go somewhere.
- 7am he wakes me up and tell him to go lay down so I can sleep
- 7:30am I actually get up and we go into the living room
- 8am my son wakes up, gets juice & food, tv on…and Coby and I go out for his first walk
- 8:30am get back from walk, gets food & water *son’s job*
- 9am till 3pm gets to do whatever he wants *within reason of course*
- 3pm gets second walk of the day *hopefully son is napping, if not he may come with us*
- 3:30pm get back, 2nd feeding for the day *son’s job*
- 4pm to 10pm gets to do what he wants
- 10pm son goes to bed. Coby gets the last walk of the day, some water and it’s about time for bed.
When we get another car on the road he will go to the park with us and have a good time. For now, he has the vast grassy areas around the apartment complex. My mom said he might be better on a farm since he is so antsy sometimes when he is here and has a lot of energy pent up. Wintertime is a hard time to have a dog that likes to be outside and a child who needs to be inside. Summertime will be probably be hard, too, as my son can’t be out in the heat *severe heat rash and eczema*… so we shall see.

Furry Friday (2)
It’s time again for Furry Friday. Now, I will admit, it was no ones birthday. I was just looking for things from previous parties that I could use for my son’s upcoming birthday extravaganza:
